The change from SAP ECC to SAP HANA is happening and at a quicker pace than you might think.
Many large companies are still using SAP 4.7, and have customised it in such a way that they believed upgrading the system will have more of a negative impact than a positive one.
Thankfully, this way of thinking is starting to change with the introduction of SAP HANA, SAP’s own database. SAP HANA is designed in such a way that customers now believe that it is essential to upgrade in order to improve efficiency, improve controls and compliance, and keep up to date with the latest technology.
SAP HANA is essentially an in-memory database and application platform, which has proven to be in excess of 1000 times quicker than a regular database like Oracle (SQL or DB2) on the same hardware. It is more than just your traditional database, as it contains building blocks for complete enterprise application. This out-of-the-box database has a wide spectrum: from transactional and reporting databases to integration layers, search, predictive and the web all within a single installation.
The benefit seen from this is allowing the simplification of design and operations, as well as real-time business applications, which is often what companies have strived to achieve.
With an option of cloud, in premises or a hybrid solution, SAP HANA has allowed its customers to choose whatever deployment option they feel fits their requirements.
The key is to influence technology to move along with innovation, not being dictated by the trends in the market which has a large price tag associated with it.
SAP HANA stores all data in-memory, in columnar format and compressed. Because HANA is so fast, sums, indexes, materialised views and aggregates are not required, which consequently reduces the database footprint by over 90%.
The beauty about SAP HANA is that everything is calculated on the fly, in main memory. This makes it achievable for companies to run OLTP and analytics applications on the same instance and at the same time, allowing for any type of real-time, ad hoc queries and analysis.
On top of this SAP built solutions to all the problems of columnar databases and row-level insert and update performance.
Customers can finally begin to reduce IT complexity by removing the need for separate and multiple Application Servers, Operational Data Stores, Datamarts and complex BI Tool implementations.
SAP HANA is a rethinking of the database model, allowing the build of applications that are not possible on traditional RDBMS, and the renewal of existing applications like the SAP Business Suite.
Recent news of SAP teaming up with Google to push its enterprise business applications onto Google’s cloud services has been received positively by customers and investors alike. Google will also be offering Google’s suite of business productivity apps to the 345,000 companies that use their services.
SAP’s head of products and innovation, Bernd Leukert, said that the partnership would benefit customers – which includes 87% of the Forbes Global 2000 by offering “enterprises the world’s best network, the fastest service, and the best platform for applications and analytics all in one stop,”
This will effectively mean that SAP will add Google Cloud support for SAP HANA, SAP Cloud and the company’s data management tools whilst adding Google Now Launcher support to Hana Express.
SAP S/4 HANA trend includes simple finance, simple logistics, BW on HANA and success factor as its core module. SAP is positioning itself as the core technology to drive digital business transformation in a variety of platforms, including SAP HANA Cloud Platform (HCP) and the SAP Business Network. SAP is aiming to become the technology underpinning for the internet of things (IoT) and big data applications.
SAP HANA is only the start of a new surge in the latest technology, but at this period in time it is the way forward for each and every SAP client if they wish to stay aligned with the latest trend, and if their aim is to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their business process management software.
